Kindling Wood

The workshop currently provides day service placements to a total of 30 members who are adults with learning and/or physical disabilities.
Chopsticks members convert scrap timber (that would otherwise be put to landfill sites) into kindling wood by working as a team to sort, chop and pack the wood.
It is then packages and sold as a high quality product through various outlets such as coal merchants, garages, hardware stores and village shops. It is also available for purchase from Chopsticks workshop at Endeavour House, Thurston Road, Northallerton DL6 2NA.
 
Prices as at Summer 2010 are :
 
Large bags of Sticks£4.60
Small bags of Sticks £1.40
Bag of logs £2.50
 
The quality and neat packaging means that wholesale customers can store the products easily and provides high value for money. A Chopsticks large bags of sticks typically weighs 8kg, compared to 3kg for a typeical carrot sack type product.

Chopsticks members are trained and supervised to: 

  • Operate the computerised saw bench
  • Run the stick chopping machine
  • Use the conveyor belt packing system and plastic bag sealer
  • Load and deliver finished packages of firewood
  • Take orders and deal with customers
  • Use a cash register and the telephone
