Valuing People

Importantly, Chopsticks aims are very much in line with the government objectives for improving the lives of people with learning disabilities set out in the white paper: ‘Valuing People, A New Strategy for Learning Disability for the 21st Century’ (Nov 2004).

Recognising that services for people with learning disabilities have been heavily reliant on large, often institutionalised day centres that have made limited contribution to promoting social inclusion or independence, two key objectives in the White Paper are to:

  • Enable people with learning disabilities to participate in all forms of employment wherever possible in paid work and to make a valued contribution to the world of work.
  • Enable people with learning disabilities to lead full and purposeful lives in their communities and to develop a range of friendships, activities and relationships.

This is exactly the service that Chopsticks offers its members and, we truly believe that the government desire to modernise day services will provide Chopsticks with an even greater opportunity to continue to develop and adapt its services.
